SHIP Requirement and Waiver

ALL undergraduate students, medical, on-campus nursing, on-campus health science, and ALL international students holding a J1 or F1 visa are required to carry student health insurance while they study at GW. These students will be automatically enrolled in the GW SHIP.

If you were automatically enrolled in GW SHIP and would like to opt-out of the coverage, the waiver period for the Spring 20201 semester begins December 1, 2020 and the deadline to waive is February 1, 2021.   Waivers are completed directly through University Health Plans. If you completed a waiver during Fall 2020, your next waiver period will be in the Fall 2021 semester between August 1st - September 12th.

Students who will be studying 100% remotely outside of Washington D.C. or internationally until January 2021 are able to use their home state or home country coverage to waive-out of the GW Student Health Insurance Plan through a fall only waiver form. You will be required to waive again for spring and will need to provide proof of comparable coverage if you are returning to campus. If your insurance already provides comprehensive coverage in Washington D.C., you can submit an annual waiver form so you are not required to waive again for spring.
